I see so many hare sculptures, that I had avoided the subject until I could come up with something a little different. I so enjoyed making this, and Lateran bronze,, exploring a different patina to set it apart.

Ever since I was asked to make a giant tortoise by a client, it has become a favorite subject. The success of the first pair of Galapagos tortoises has led me to make this, my newest. I have depicted another sub-species this time, brilliantly adapted as they are to their own particular environment, within the Island group. It was these specific adaptations of the tortoise population and other species that famously led Charles Darwin to write the Origin of Species.

The iconic animal of the North American plains is another fascinating subject for a sculpture. They used to roam in vast herds, but were all but wiped out by hunting in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are no longer endangered but roam in far smaller numbers than before.

When I first saw a photo of the Brahman I knew I had to make one…full of muscle and those wonderful folds of skin…..so sculptural. A beef breed developed for arid areas by crossing with breeds of Indian cattle. Popular in North America and Australia.

Literally translated as’ water horse’, this large beast spends most of its time in water where it is surprisingly agile.
Whilst on safari in South Africa, there was an old Hippo which was often very close to the lodges. My guide explained that he was an old boy who was ‘exiled’ from the herd, which is the sad end most animals eventually face. However I was able to get some amazing footage of him.

I was lucky enough to have a week on Safari in South Africa. Despite being told that we might not see a Leopard, we came across several. One in particular was in no hurry to be anywhere else and we spent the best part of an hour watching him, climbing and just lounging, as only cats can. I love the cats, big and small so this was a wonderful, memorable time. I loved exploring the lines of this lovely animal in the sculpture.

The small study for the larger life size sculpture I was to make. I made this piece in two sizes; 12 inches (30cms) and life size- 12 foot (3.68 m) high. These beautiful, massive fish with their electric blue colouring are famously one of the ultimate game fish.

Animals are capable of surprising acts and these powerful predators have been known to visit and play with tethered dogs, with tremendous gentleness given their power and capability.

Whilst on Safari, my ranger insisted on leaving the safety of the land rover to look at the White Rhino. These fascinating creatures are incredibly huge and powerful creatures.

The most beautiful of big cats, sadly most of us will only ever see them in captivity and it is largely believed that soon they will only exist in zoos and private collections.
Its widely believed there are more tigers kept as pets in Texas than exist in the wild, which is a sad and crazy situation!
